I can either work at the owner's home, or work with the owner and horse at my home.
I regularly travel to the owner/horse's home. It lets me see them in their normal surroundings, and much information can be gained from having an outsider's perspective.
This can be to help with either a particular issue, or just to improve general skills. With horses/handlers with no prior clicker training experience, it is important to spend the initial sessions making sure the basic lessons are covered. This means that you can use the clicker, and work with a highly motivated horse, and still stay safe. Also, usually horses with "problem" behaviours actually have gaps in the very basic parts of their training. So it can help to iron these out before tackling the apparent issue, if it's even still there.
This also works well if you plan on starting your youngster at home, but would like some guidance to help you along the way.
Cost: £20 per hour, plus diesel costs if you live outwith the area. The initial visit is usually the longest, as there is lots to discuss. Further sessions can be kept to an hour's length. It is important to note that although the total session lasts, say, an hour, this is generally split into several small sessions. This helps learning and gives us a chance to discuss progress in between working.
The other option is to board the horse at my home, and travel to me for sessions. This works well when there are a number of areas that need addressed, or for starting young horses away from home. I can work with the horse personally in between sessions, and cover more ground. By having the owner there regularly, they too can keep up to date with the learning, and are comfortable working with the horse themselves. It is not just a case of hand the horse over, wait 6 weeks and then get him back!
Cost: £100 per week, plus feed and hay. Keep included in price. I will work with your horse once or twice daily.
A detailed plan is discussed by myself and the owner before training starts. This enables us to both be entirely clear what we want to achieve with the training. It also helps us know what level the owner wants themselves and the horse at before returning home. The clearer the targets are, the easier it is to train what you want.
